another silly issue: the GEMA (german ASCAP, BMI, BIEM, whatever society) came up with a sollution to the criticism on its royalties system regarding clubs and discotheques.

for a long time the GEMA assumed that in clubs and discos you’ll get the same music like radio stations are broadcasting. rates payed by the clubs have been allocated to those who already got enough but actually didn’t get any ‘floor-play’. now they developed a monitoring system, the GEMA-blackbox!

100 blackboxes have been installed in various german clubs. it’s recording parts of the dj-set. those recordings are going to be evaluated by ‘experts’. this is gonna be easy when dealing with mainstream clubs (playing what’s in the charts) but will turn out to be a nigtmare with ‘underground’ sets where all the tracks are mixed, pitched, etc…

i’d love to dj at a black-box venue with 4 turntables and play each record for just 16 bars and then crossfade into the next one ;)
