just a snapshot from the chapter “at the soundlab by night”:

it’s always a sense of delight for us DIYers when the soldering iron is cooling off and things just work out like they are supposed to ;)
and there’re plenty of things in here:
the notorious analogue solutions TR606 sound mod, a sync>trigger interface driving two simplencer step sequencers raising the dearest sounds out of our punkbox synth.

just teasing :) stay tuned…

AKAI XR10 ready for bending

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

as a follow-up to the regulars’ table i was fiddling with
lars’ AKAI XR-10 to check out the options of circuit bending according to this drum machine.

unlike other (more popular?) beat boxes there’re few sources about this one and we had to find out on our own where to apply the short circuits. fortunately sound-eproms are easy to find on a PCB and in this case it’s the ICs 9/10 to lift the AKAI sound up to the 21st century.

allright - ready to bend, as we now the know bending joints next step is to build the patch matrix. as featured in the video there’s one of them crashing the machine, maybe better to leave out that one ;) stay tuned…

UPDATE: meanwhile i got a manual for the XR10 too:

lfo on a breadboard

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

fun with breadboards:

LFO circuit hooked up on a standard breadboard

electronic circuits tend to be really simple when it comes to basic applications. like the simple LFO found at machines.hyperreal.org/categories/DIY/schematics/LFO.circuit.txt. a repetetive modulation is just one of the most desired effects, and one never got enough sources to create tremolos, vibratos or slow rising sweeps. unlike modern ‘closed’ synthesizers where the modulation matrix is limited by whatever is built in, the analog/modular domain offers plenty of modulation inputs (aka CV). time to build one, two, many LFOs ;)
