thinking about the first cd masterings we did back in the days i mostly remember the phrase the opening track has to be loud. admittetly when playing back a brand new cd the speaker should be pumping or you’ll gonna be disappointed. however good dynamic response is a must, for this has been one of the killer features when compact discs were introduced. nowadays peak meters barely move anymore and music suffers from flat overcompressed programme material:

how could one not know RUN DMC’s famous it’s tricky song?

eweek wrote:

in a 49-page complaint filed last month, The Knack’s front man Doug Fieger and lead guitarist Berton Averre claim that Run DMC illegally copied parts of their 1978 hit “My Sharona” into Run DMC’s 1986 hit “It’s Tricky.” Although the statute of limitations for copyright infringement is three years, Fieger and Averre claim they had never heard Run DMC’s song — one of the most famous rap songs of all time — until August 2005.

funny enough, this suit is towards online distributors only, for they “copy” the work each time anyone is downloading the purchased track. stop the madness…

gema blackbox

another silly issue: the GEMA (german ASCAP, BMI, BIEM, whatever society) came up with a sollution to the criticism on its royalties system regarding clubs and discotheques.
codename operation sisyphos?

for a long time the GEMA assumed that in clubs and discos you’ll get the same music like radio stations are broadcasting. rates payed by the clubs have been allocated to those who already got enough but actually didn’t get any ‘floor-play’. now they developed a monitoring system, the GEMA-blackbox!

how to waste 4.6 mio usd

Monday, February 20th, 2006

about 1 million fans just saw the rolling stones playing for free in rio de janeiro; well, at least thousands of them while the majority had to watch the show on various big video screens. the rollin methuselahs were happy about the city of rio and some telecommunications companies were forking out 4.6 mio USD to organize the show of their life. all the world and his brother were happy to catch a glimpse at mick jagger’s bastard and how he’s a look-a-like (…see his mouth is as big as…) and about 4000 VIPs willing to pose for photoshootings with the most recent cellphones.

giant spectacle, giant budget. ordinary indie-bands could go on tour for about 16 years nonstop. about 6.000 ‘ordinary’ band shows could be hosted - probably reaching about twice as much people; of course without the rock-elders and their brats, instead providing face-to-face interaction between the audience and the bands. the rolling stones’ gig could be projected onto videoscreens as well if desired…
